Chaz talking with his peers

Three priorities, each with a plan.

Every proposal states what Student Government can do directly, who I'll work with, and how you'll know I delivered.

Community

Community life at UChicago is crucial to our experience as college students. Some areas of community still need to be improved.

  • Improve & Expand Third Spaces
  • Increase 2 UChicago Dorm Guest limit to 4
  • Done by: Spring Quarter

  • Introduce more robust and accessible financial assistance programs for printing and laundry.
  • Extend maroon dollars to be used for laundry and printing.
  • Include menstrual products in dorm restrooms as a part of wellness needs.

Dear Class of 2030,

My name is Chazlance Moore, but most people call me Chaz. I’m from Columbus, Ohio, and I’m running for College Council because I believe that your voice can create unimaginable change. I want to serve as your connection between peers and administration. I want to be the friend you have who always lends a hand, the friend who always has your back. I want to be the friend you feel comfortable calling in the middle of the night. The friend you can complain to. The friend who listens. Most importantly, I want to use everything in my power to hear your concerns and create meaningful change to address them. I want to be your voice in USG.

It has been my greatest pleasure to meet so many of you already! From meeting you at the first admitted students day in Chicago in February, to Open House in April, to creating one of the first UChicago ‘30 group chats on Instagram, to Career Exploration Week in New York City, to Chicago Urban Explorers, you all have been such welcoming and inspiring people that I am more than proud to call both friend and peer. If I have not met you yet, please reach out! I would love to grab lunch sometime! Living on campus with you all these past few weeks has been an incredible journey that I cannot wait to keep experiencing for the next 4 years! Listening to your voices and concerns that arise on campus, as well as my own experiences talking with older students and faculty, have culminated in my campaign that I hope you are willing to engage with.

To put it simply, my campaign is built upon three pillars: Community, Access, and Transparency.

Community. The memories we will remember most from our college experience are grounded in where we gather and who we interact with. To ensure that the community is protected and enriched, I will be working to improve and expand third spaces and raise dorm guest limits from 2 to 4.

Access. Printing, laundry, and basic wellness supplies should not cause any student stress. As economists, it’s also important to understand the implications of making everything free. To make printing and laundry more accessible, I will work to implement a more robust financial aid program that helps students in need and builds systems already in place. This includes expanding and removing restrictions on the emergency laundry assistance program and expanding limited free printing for those in need of financial assistance from just CCSS to printers around campus, prioritizing assisting students who face financial stress using these services. Furthermore, I will work with fellow councilmembers to implement free menstrual products across dorm bathrooms, which I have noticed my peer Kiva Jenson (@kivaforcouncil) has also recommended. In coordination with my peer Tony Brouse (@tonybforusg), I also believe that re-evaluating gendered bathrooms to decrease the distance traveled to reach the bathroom in dorms is also a viable solution that I will work to implement.

Transparency. You deserve to know how your money is being used. I promise to push for a clearer online tuition breakdown and public receipts for Student Government Finance Committee purchases.

I consider each of you to be my friend. Friends support each other, challenge each other, and are honest with each other. I want to be completely honest with you at all times. All leaders have limits to their power, and I will only be able to act within the limits of what I am able to do through USG, in coordination with the University’s and USG’s founding documents and legislation. What I can promise you in full honesty is unrelenting commitment and unbothered determination. Whether it’s advocating to administration, creating petitions, or debating changing specific policies already in place, I promise to stay true to my mission founded in community, access, and transparency, with the main priority of always doing everything to support our community with the resources available to me.

I promise to hold myself to the same standard I’m asking of the University. That’s why I have outlined feasible markers to reflect my progress towards our goals as a class. A progress tracker and video outlining progress in my first 60 days. A public report every quarter will detail what has been accomplished recently. A plain account at the end of the term reflecting what got done, what didn’t, and why.

I don’t have all the answers, and I don’t want to pretend I do. My site has a form where you can engage with my campaign directly. Tell me what I’m missing. Tell me what I’m getting right. Tell me what I’m doing wrong. Tell me your ideas!

Polls open October 19th at 8am. I’d be more than grateful for your vote, and just as grateful for your ideas before then!

With love,
Your Friend Chazlance Moore
